The EU's Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has begun a formal investigation into Lord Peter Mandelson, following his previous dismissal as UK ambassador to the US due to connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson, who served as the European trade commissioner between 2004 and 2008, is under scrutiny for allegations of misconduct during his term. The investigation was prompted by a request from the European Commission, which indicated concerns about Mandelson's dealings with Epstein.
OLAF stated it must analyze recent information before determining if the allegations involve fraud. The investigation could uncover emails exchanged between Mandelson and Epstein during crucial financial situations like the 2010 eurozone crisis.
Although Mandelson has not publicly commented on the matter, sources indicate he denies any criminality and asserts he didn’t act for personal gain.
Should the investigation reveal criminal conduct, OLAF will refer the case to the European Prosecutor's Office. They have the authority to recommend sanctions but ultimately lack the power to prosecute.
As the situation develops, it poses significant implications for both Mandelson's reputation and the political landscape in the UK.
