Kyushu shaken by a powerful earthquake
On Tuesday, a 6.8‑magnitude quake rattled Japan’s Kyushu island, knocking out power to 40,000 households and sending over 150,000 residents into evacuation zones.
Infrastructure suffered too: roads crumbled, part of a historic castle wall fell, and a footbridge was destroyed. A collapsed chimney at a paper factory in Kumamoto left several people missing.
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reports the quake’s after‑shocks are still being monitored, while emergency teams search for survivors and restore critical services.
