In brief
Germany's BND agency suggested an 80-90% chance that COVID-19 leaked from a lab, contradicting China's claims.
Germany's foreign intelligence agency, BND, reportedly assessed in 2020 that there was an 80-90% probability COVID-19 emerged from a laboratory leak in China. This assessment, discovered by two German newspapers, highlights suspicions surrounding the Wuhan Institute of Virology, known for altering viruses to study their transmissibility among humans. Despite global debates, China's officials firmly deny any lab-related origin of the virus and reference a World Health Organization (WHO) investigation stating the lab-leak theory is "extremely unlikely." However, growing interest in the lab-leak theory has surfaced within intelligence circles, including the US CIA, which acknowledged a greater likelihood of a lab-related origin compared to natural origins. The BND's findings, part of a confidential project dubbed Project Saaremaa, claimed that safety violations occurred at the Wuhan lab. Commissioned by then-Chancellor Angela Merkel, this report remained classified until brought to light recently. After analysis, it was shared with the CIA, which echoed sentiments of a potential research-related origin for the pandemic, albeit with limited confidence in their conclusions.China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the origins of COVID-19 should be established through scientific means and criticized political manipulation in the ongoing discussions. The WHO's earlier investigation faced scrutiny, especially after critics argued that the lab-leak theory was inadequately addressed in their findings. While the natural origins hypothesis—suggesting the virus jumped from bats to humans via an intermediary host—was initially accepted, the absence of matching genetic viruses in animals has led to increasing skepticism in the scientific community. The question of COVID-19's origins continues to spark global debate as more evidence emerges and experts demand thorough investigations.
