In brief

The US economy sees a slower job growth of 143,000 in January, but the unemployment rate drops to 4%. Analysts remain cautious as uncertainties loom over new administration policies.

US job growth slowed down in January as the country added only 143,000 jobs, bringing the unemployment rate to a low 4%, according to the Labor Department. This reflects a stable economy, albeit growing at a slower pace, as US President Donald Trump's administration prepares to implement significant policy changes, including budget cuts and stricter immigration regulations. Despite the job growth slowdown, analysts perceive the overall job market as steady. The Federal Reserve recently paused interest rate cuts after a series of reductions, indicating a general confidence in the job sector. "January's payrolls report didn't particularly spark any new worries about economic stability," stated Ellen Zentner from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.Jobs in the healthcare and retail sectors contributed to January's gains, despite challenges from winter storms and wildfires across the nation. Hourly pay also increased by 4.1% from the previous year. However, the total job growth for the previous year is now viewed differently due to annual revisions pointing to fewer jobs added in 2024 than first thought.Former White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt commented that the report exposes weaknesses in the Biden administration’s economic stance, emphasizing the need for Trump's growth-focused policies. Economists, including Samuel Tombs of Pantheon Macroeconomics, suggest that while fewer jobs were created than projected, the employment trend is stabilizing, even as uncertainties linger regarding the impact of the new administration's policies.
