For Ghana, the loss of Sulemana Abdul Samed—a giant of 7ft 4in—sent shock waves across the country. Diagnosed with gigantism and Marfan syndrome, he grew rapidly after age 22, reaching towering heights that drew attention from distant towns.

Sama was born in Gambaga, a quiet village that became famous overnight when he was seen walking past local markets. People from all over Ghana would come to meet the friendly, generous giant, who earned the nickname Awuche (“Let’s Go”) in Hausa.

He died Monday in Tamale hospital after sores on his legs became infected. Despite treatment, his body could not recover. His relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, said the community was shocked and many continue to visit his home to learn what happened.

Before his death, a benefactor—Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former president John Mahama—recently helped cover Vaznam medical bills. Kahukaa also managed to find a cure plan that gave hope for his recovery.

Residents of Gambaga plan to bury Awuche in Tamale to avoid overcrowding in the village, but his legacy as a kind, easy‑going giant remains a bright spot in a world that often misses personal stories.
