Tarun Tejpal, the former editor of the investigative magazine Tehelka, has been found guilty of raping a woman who worked for him. The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court overturned his 2021 acquittal in a decade‑old case.
The court convicted Tejpal under Indian rape and sexual harassment statutes after the victim—whose identity is protected by law—alleged an assault in an elevator during a Tehelka event in November 2013.
After his arrest, Tejpal spent seven months in jail until the Supreme Court granted him bail. He has consistently denied the accusations.
He will be sentenced later on Thursday. The Goa government urges the bench to impose the maximum penalty and he may appeal to a higher court.
The case is a flashpoint for India’s struggle over media power, personal freedom, and the pressure on women to speak out against alleged harassment.
