In brief
Chinese and Russian leaders reaffirm their commitment to deepening relations in a video discussion, despite looming US pressures.
In a significant video call, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin renewed their commitment to fostering strong bilateral ties just hours after Donald Trump's inauguration. During the hour-and-a-half meeting, Putin affectionately referred to Xi as his "dear friend," emphasizing that their relationship is built on friendship, trust, and mutual support amidst external challenges. Both leaders acknowledged the need for closer strategic coordination, with Xi urging Putin to reinforce their mutual support and safeguard each other's interests. This call comes in the context of Trump's hostile remarks towards China, labeling it an "abuser," and his warnings about potential consequences for Russia related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.Despite these tensions, Putin insisted that any resolution regarding Ukraine must respect Russian interests, indicating that Beijing's support for Moscow remains crucial. As trade between the two nations skyrocketed to a record $240 billion in 2023, their alliance appears to be stronger than ever, with an increase of over 64% since 2021.The discussion also touched on various global issues, including the Middle East, South Korea, and Taiwan. Notably, while Xi previously had a positive conversation with Trump, no talks have yet occurred between the new US president and Putin, who congratulated Trump through state media earlier that day. The leaders conveyed their readiness to engage with the US, should Trump's administration express genuine interest.
