Zimbabwean football star Divine Lunga survived a gun attack in Johannesburg’s Hillbrow, escaping unharmed after a hidden gunman fired at his car.
The 31‑year‑old, who plays for both Zimbabwe’s national team and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, was on a routine trip when his vehicle was hit by a burst of gunfire. Police say the attack was an attempted murder, but no arrests have been made so far.
Crime continues to be a pressing issue in South Africa, which has one of the highest murder rates worldwide. The incident highlights the dangers that even high‑profile figures face in urban areas.
According to Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, investigators believe the gunman mistook Lunga for an undercover police officer. The footballer and his younger brother were en route to church when the shooting occurred.
