Ferry Sinks Off Guyana Coast – 133 Onboard
A passenger ferry, the MV Barima, capsized off the coast of Guyana just after leaving the capital Georgetown on Saturday night. The 40‑metre (131‑foot) boat, built in 1939, was carrying 116 passengers and 17 crew – a total of 133 people – and was well within its weight limit.
Local officials said 67 people have been rescued so far, including 15 children. The search and rescue operation kicked off at 23:01 local time (03:01 GMT) after a distress call reached government teams and private vessels.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips said the vessel was licensed to carry more than 300 passengers, and that the captain – who survived – has joined the efforts to widen the search.
While investigators check the 250 life jackets, 2 rigid life‑rafts and 6 inflatable life‑rafts on board, families waiting in the area are offered support centres with counselling.
The MV Barima was headed to Port Kaituma when it overturned near the small island of Iron Punt. All passengers’ names will be released once the rescue sweep is complete.
