Family of a murdered Idaho student says the killer’s recent plea shows a “narcissistic” shift, sparking outrage and questions about the justice system.
Bryan Kohberger, the criminology PhD student who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death in November 2022, was sentenced last year to four consecutive life terms. However, in a July interview with the New York Times he declared he was “taking back” his guilty plea – a move he says rested on “false promises and blatant disinformation”.
The Goncalves family, whose daughter Kaylee was one of the victims, has slammed Kohberger for changing his position, calling him a “narcissist” who never “cried foul” and claiming the case’s focus should stay on the victims rather than the killer.
Idaho’s Attorney General Raúl Labrador released a statement reminding families that justice has already endured unimaginable loss, and that the state “stands ready to do whatever is necessary to ensure justice is fully carried out.”
Despite evidence tying Kohberger to the crime scene, investigators could not prove motive – and the case remains puzzling, raising questions about accuracy, public focus, and possible appeals.
