Europe’s tallest Virgin Mary statue goes up in Poland
A 55.6‑metre concrete statue of the Virgin Mary has been unveiled in the small village of Konotopie, making it the tallest statue of its kind in Europe.
The monument is almost 18m taller than Buenos Aires’ famous Christ the Redeemer and more than twice the height of a nearby 98m Virgin Mary statue in the Philippines.
The statue was consecrated by Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski during the Feast of the Assumption, a day chosen to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was commissioned by a local millionaire couple who wanted a grand tribute to faith in their home region.
The opening ceremony featured helicopters dropping rose petals over the towering figure, which rises with a crown and arms open in a wide embrace.
The event drew attention from the broader public, including former president Lech Wałęsa, who spoke about the importance of faith. He added, “I started with the Virgin Mary and I end with the Virgin Mary.”
While Poland remains deeply Catholic, younger generations in cities are moving away from church traditions. The statue’s placement in a remote field marks a symbolic return to faith in a country where religious influence is waning.
