Deadly Nepal‑Tibet Floods: What We Know
Massive landslides and flash floods on the Nepal‑Tibet border have left hundreds dead or missing. Rescue ops are underway as Chinese and Nepali authorities grapple with the fallout.
What caused the deadly landslide?
Scientists say the disaster began with a glacier collapse, not the initially reported 4.4‑magnitude earthquake. The frozen mass broke, pulling rocks, soil and water downhill and generating a catastrophic debris flow.
Who is lost and missing?
Official figures report at least 270 deaths, with 826 people missing—over 500 of whom are tourists. Missing nationals include:

- Ukraine – 53
- Malaysia – 51
- UK – 33
- Canada – 24
- US – 65
- Australia – 34
Where did the flood hit?
The surge hit towns along the Trishuli, Bhote Koshi and Narayani rivers, destroying roads and buildings and forcing military helicopters to evacuate survivors.
Government response
NPR’s prime minister called the shock deep and vowed coordination with China. China’s President Xi promised enhanced monitoring‑and‑warning systems. India, the UN and the US are all stepping in with aid and manpower, while Britain is ready to support nationals.
