MIAMI — A longtime informant for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Andres Zapata, has managed to avoid prison time after pleading guilty to failing to pay taxes on nearly $4 million he earned from his undercover work. Sentenced to time served in a Texas court, he agreed to cooperate in a broader investigation of DEA agents involved in misconduct.
Having spent years assisting law enforcement from Colombia to the U.S., Zapata's history entailed not just intelligence gathering, but also extravagant escapades, which he undertook with rogue DEA agents. These activities have now come under scrutiny as part of an ongoing investigation into their operations.
Zapata, who earned $3.8 million from the DEA between 2015 and 2020, was extradited from Colombia. His attorney argued it was unusual for someone in his position to face penalties for tax evasion on funds they may not have known had to be reported. The sentencing judge acknowledged Zapata’s cooperation but also ordered him to pay back $1.2 million in taxes due to the U.S. government.
His case sheds light on a larger issue of accountability within law enforcement and the ethical boundaries of informants within the DEA.
