A fierce wildfire erupted in Crete’s Rethymno region, unleashing 125‑km/h winds that pushed the blaze over villages and tourist resorts. Roughly 8,000 residents were evacuated, but 2 firefighters lost their lives fighting the fire, while a third died on the mainland. Across Europe, similar flames have scorched Spain, Portugal and France, fueled by a summer heatwave that has left thousands displaced and vegetation tinder‑dry.

A fierce wildfire erupted in the Rethymno region of Crete on Wednesday, thanks to gale‑force winds of up to 125km/h. Within hours, 8,000 locals and tourists were evacuated overnight, but many returned later that day once conditions eased.

The blaze cost two firefighters their lives on the island and a third on the mainland near Gytheio in the Peloponnese. A deputy regional governor called the day a “dark day” and the fire remains one of the biggest on the island.

European Wildfire Chaos

Spain and Portugal are battling similar fires, with over 200,000 ha burned and more than 1,000 people displaced. In France, a Gaza‑sized blaze in Gironde consumed 240 homes, though rains have curbed its spread.

Millions of hectares across the Mediterranean have been destroyed this summer, driven by a mild wet winter followed by relentless heatwaves that dry out vegetation.
