In brief
As the U.S. imposes tariffs on steel and aluminum, the EU retaliates with tariffs on goods including bourbon and boats, targeting $28 billion in exports.
The European Union is reacting to new tariffs imposed by the United States on steel and aluminum. With the American tariffs set at 25%, the EU is firing back with their own tariffs on popular American products like boats, bourbon, and motorcycles. This retaliatory move aims to offset the potential $28 billion loss in exports caused by U.S. restrictions, which could hit various sectors, including cookware and window frames that use steel and aluminum. The EU had previously implemented similar tariffs during Trump's presidency, which were paused under Biden but will now return on April 1. Additionally, the EU plans to announce further tariffs on another €18 billion worth of U.S. goods after consulting with member states for two weeks. This back-and-forth signals escalating trade tensions between one of the world's closest trade partners.
