In brief
As peace talks stall, the EU aims for a significant economic impact on Moscow.
The European Union has taken a bold step against Russia by announcing a fresh round of sanctions aimed at President Vladimir Putin's energy and banking sectors. On June 10, 2025, the EU's executive arm rolled out measures designed to apply mounting pressure, including a proposed ban on transactions with the Nord Stream pipelines. This looks to cut off energy flows from Russia to Europe, a key resource for the nation. The latest sanctions propose to lower the price cap on Russian gas in global markets, aiming to reduce Russia's revenue. In addition, sanctions target Russian banks and the so-called "shadow fleet," old tanker ships used to secretly transport oil and evade existing sanctions. These measures would blacklist more ships engaging in this covert trade. This proposal marks the 18th set of sanctions from Brussels since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. With ongoing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine failing to yield results, the EU’s new measures are strategic moves designed to undermine Russian economic power at a crucial time during the conflict. The announcement indicates not only a tightening of economic restrictions but also a continued commitment from the EU to support Ukraine amidst the ongoing war.
