In brief

Peng Yujiang, a 55-year-old paraglider, accidentally soared 8,500m into the sky due to a rare air current while testing equipment, capturing a viral moment of terror.

During a routine test of his new parachute in north-west China, 55-year-old Peng Yujiang found himself in the adventure of a lifetime - but it was a ride he never intended to take! Testing his gear at 3,000m above sea level over the breathtaking Qilian mountains, a rare phenomenon known as "cloud suck" suddenly yanked him up an astonishing 5,000m into the clouds, reaching heights of 8,500m (27,800ft)!A camera attached to his glider captured the heart-pounding moments that unfolded, now making waves across Douyin, China's version of TikTok. In the footage, you can see him clutching the controls while ice crystals formed on him in the freezing conditions, surrounded by nothing but white. "It was terrifying... I couldn't see any direction," he recounted, emphasizing how crucial his compass was during the disorienting spiral. As he soared high, the lack of oxygen and bone-chilling temperatures around -40C presented life-threatening challenges. Despite the chaos, Peng managed to navigate his way back down, although he possibly lost consciousness during the descent. While the event left him shaken, he now faces a six-month suspension from flying as Chinese authorities investigate the unauthorized flight. Ironically, he had only meant to test the comfort and fit of his equipment on the ground!
