In brief
Miss Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, has made history by finishing as the second-highest contestant in the Miss Universe pageant, following a rollercoaster of experiences both in South Africa and Nigeria.
Chidimma Adetshina, crowned Miss Nigeria, is making waves as the second contestant in Miss Universe, proudly claiming the titles of Miss Africa and Oceania. Although she faced trolling and xenophobic remarks linked to her Nigerian heritage while participating in Miss South Africa, Adetshina rose above the hate, declaring, "I'm so proud of myself and I just made history!" Adetshina’s journey took a turn when allegations regarding her mother’s nationality threatened her South African identity. Nevertheless, she triumphed in the Miss Nigeria competition, earning her spot in Miss Universe held in Mexico City. Notably, she became the highest-placed black African woman in the event since Zozibini Tunzi's victory in 2019. Despite the controversy surrounding her identity, Adetshina maintains her pride in being both "proudly South African" and "proudly Nigerian." She has expressed the need for therapy to cope with the harassment during her experiences, showing resilience that will inspire many across the globe.
