In brief

Following an E. coli outbreak that left several people ill, McDonald’s has confirmed the safety of their Quarter Pounder beef patties, allowing sales to resume in all US locations.

Due to recent testing by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, McDonald’s beef patties tested negative for E. coli, leading the chain to lift the suspension on Quarter Pounders that had been put in place at a fifth of their restaurants. McDonald’s emphasized confidence in their updated supply chain and notes isolated issues with slivered onions as a potential source of contamination. The fast food giant announced the return of the popular burger, stating, “The issue appears to be contained to a particular ingredient and geography.” Cesar Piña, McDonald's North America Chief Supply Chain Officer, remarked that the contaminated product has been purged from supply routes. Earlier, the CDC warned that individuals experiencing symptoms like diarrhea or fever after consuming a Quarter Pounder should seek medical attention, as symptoms may arise up to four days post-consumption. McDonald's is currently facing lawsuits from several customers who fell ill due to the outbreak. The incident has impacted McDonald's shares, which have dropped by over 7.5% since the CDC’s alert. Amid rising prices and market challenges, many fast-food chains, including McDonald's, are striving to enhance value offerings for customers.
