Zelensky Proposes NATO Membership to Halt War’s 'Hot Phase'
Ukrainian President Zelensky believes NATO membership for Ukraine could help end the current war, but only if it includes all of Ukraine.
In a recent Sky News interview, President Zelensky expressed that unoccupied parts of Ukraine should come under NATO’s protection to potentially stop the ongoing conflict. While he is open to accepting NATO membership for only the territories Ukraine currently controls, he emphasized that such an offer must first extend to all of Ukraine's internationally recognized borders, including areas held by Russia. It remains uncertain if NATO will consider such a plan, as Zelensky believes it is crucial to secure NATO’s guarantee to prevent further Russian aggression. Meanwhile, discussions about NATO’s stance towards a divided Ukraine have yet to yield formal proposals.
Zelensky highlighted the dangers of ceasefires without adequate security mechanisms, underscoring that true stability would require NATO’s involvement. However, with President Putin showing no intention of relinquishing territories in Ukraine, the future of NATO’s role remains uncertain.
The war shows no signs of abating as Ukraine continues to face severe challenges, including attacks on energy infrastructure.
