In brief

Legal complaints filed claim Apple’s supply chain involves “blood minerals” contributing to violence and child labor.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has stepped into the spotlight by filing legal complaints against tech giant Apple in France and Belgium. This move comes as they accuse Apple of sourcing “conflict minerals” from the eastern region, where armed groups control mining operations. The DRC's legal representatives argue that Apple is knowingly benefiting from these minerals, which they label as "blood minerals," contributing to a cycle of violence, forced labor, and environmental harm.According to the DRC, the minerals, specifically tin, tantalum, and tungsten, are allegedly extracted from conflict zones, processed through international supply chains, and ultimately end up in consumer electronics. The DRC's lawyers say these practices have fueled militias and armed groups in their ongoing conflicts. While Apple has stated its commitment to responsible sourcing and supply chain transparency, the scrutiny continues as French and Belgian authorities consider the evidence presented. Apple has previously asserted that it has rigorous auditing processes to avoid purchasing minerals linked to human rights abuses. They have removed 14 non-compliant smelters from their supply chain in 2023 alone. The ongoing struggle to eradicate conflict minerals remains prominent as rights groups highlight the connection between tech companies and the violence in DRC, raising questions about ethical sourcing in the tech industry. Meanwhile, Rwanda, often linked to the conflict mineral trade, has dismissed the DRC’s claims as exaggerated efforts to gain media attention.
