In brief
Despite its previous ban due to data security concerns, Shein is back and ready to offer trendy fashion at affordable prices.
Shein, the popular Chinese fast fashion app, is making waves in India again after a five-year hiatus, thanks to a new partnership with Reliance Retail. The app relaunched this past Friday night, sparking enthusiasm among young fashion lovers. Following a prior ban in 2020 due to data security concerns exacerbated by rising tensions with China, Shein's return comes with strict regulations requiring all user data to be stored in India.Under the long-term licensing deal, Shein aims to exclusively offer affordable fashion options while operating only in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru for now. With items starting as low as 199 rupees (around $2.30), the platform has already attracted over 10,000 downloads.Reliance Retail is now taking the reins of Shein’s operations in India, positioning itself as a key player in the fast fashion sector. As part of the agreement, Shein will not have access to user data, ensuring compliance with Indian regulations. Moreover, the fashion giant will assist in training local garment manufacturers, creating a mutually beneficial initiative aimed at boosting textile exports from India. This comeback is seen as a rare exception to India's ongoing ban on over 200 Chinese apps, signaling a shift in engagement between the two nations. Ready to expand its presence, Shein is all set to thrive in the vibrant Indian retail landscape once again.
